GREAT EXPECTATIONS...

Image
We all have them, expectations that is. There are expectations in your workplace (mostly along the lines of do what you are meant to do and you will get paid)...there are expectations in your home life. The groceries are bought on such and such day, the magic fairy does the washing and ironing and cleaning of the house, beds are made, meals are cooked. And so many events seem to thrust more expectations upon us. Every holiday, whether birthdays, Christmas or the Easter just past, and we are bombarded with images of happy families and big groups of friends celebrating. Every image shows people happy and laughing. So what happens if that doesn't happen? People move on, family moves away or have other plans. Friends lose touch...and with so many blended families, life becomes more and more complicated. But we know what will happen, what the media tells us should happen...we should be with loved ones having FUN! Easter, for us, is a family get-together. There is...

PICKING UP A BOOK...

It's that time of the year when we have over indulged on chocolate and hot cross bun, and we can put another Easter firmly behind us. But oh the chocolate...and yum to those buns. Which of course means it's school holidays. With the library closed for four days (public holidays) the first day we are open is...busy. Yep, let's just say busy. Not only do all the regulars come in, starved of books, eager to claim more to take home. Because it is school holidays we have the families coming in.  Parents who already have children stating 'I'm bored.' DVD's zoom out the door. Console games are played endlessly. Some school projects are begun, not many but a few. There are some that get away. Take a few days off, a week off...even the whole holidays off. Get out and about and do something. Anything. Other half and I had the four days of Easter off. First day we gardened...mowed...weeded...tidied up. Second day... we adopted George. T...

CHOCOLATE OVERLOAD....

Where on earth is the year going? I'm sure it was only a week ago that I pulled down the Christmas tree, swept up the last of the pine needles and hid the wrapping paper covered in laughing Santas. But without missing a beat the year has marched ahead, against my will I must add....and we have just had Easter. A time, in my household, for too much chocolate and great family get-togethers. This year not only did we have son and his family( my excuse for an Easter egg hunt, as if I needed one), daughter and her husband (that is so strange to write let alone say)....even if separate occasions a day apart- but also other half's mother and my dad popped in. To top it off, we had some lovely weather. Won't talk about the unwanted wasps that made the al fresco Easter lunch turn into, quick grab the plates and head inside. Of course now that we have over indulged on chocolate...we open glazed eyes to discover that it is now April and half way through autumn. (side n...

ROSES ARE RED....

Well we've just survived Easter. There was too much food, too much chocolate but never too much family (which is what it is all about). We had my son, his partner and three young ones up for the day.  There was old fashioned fun...hide and seek...penguin bowling (with interference)...and of course the obligatory Easter Egg hunt. There is nothing like watching small children - with the helpful hints of bigger children - scramble around searching for those gaudy decorated eggs. I mean they do stand out...how hard is it to find some of the above nestled amongst books or sitting in a pot plant? Then I remembered a book I read recently. It was a Young Adult, it was set in a futuristic society...there were vampirish like creatures..the world was a dark and bleak place. Or was it? Half way through I had a niggle that something wasn't working for me. Three quarters of the way through and I discovered there was no colour. Don't get me wrong- I didn't expect fl...
