READING HOUR...

Reading is such a vital every day part of my life that I tend to take it for granted. It's part of my job as well as my personal daily routine.

However tomorrow, Thursday 20th of September is Australian Reading Hour.

So what's Reading Hour you ask? Simple. Stop what you are doing for one hour and pick up a book.
They want Australians to remember (or even be introduced) to the joys and benefits of reading.

There are so many benefits of reading.

It reduces stress. Yep, you get to sit/ lie / sprawl and immerse yourself. Lose yourself. Forget all your problems and situations while you discover worlds beyond your own.

Is great mental stimulation and helps you to expand your vocabulary. How many times have we stalled at an unknown word or phrase? But then we look it up, we roll it over our tongue. We speak it out loud, try it in a sentence or two. And sometimes we file it away later so we can blithely drop it into a conversation.

Reading betters our writing skills and our knowledge. Yes you DON'T have to read fiction. Non-fiction is a totally acceptable genre to immerse yourself in. And with non-fiction you can't help but learn something new.

The above are some of the benefits adults gain when reading. The benefits children receive are a hundred times increased.

Every statistic will show you that children who are read to are a year more advanced when they start school. Not only with literacy skills, but also emotionally.

It sparks their imagination and stimulates curiosity.  So many conversations are started whilst or after reading a book. Did the duck find his mum? Was that really his dad in disguise? Did that bite really give Spiderman his super abilities?

Reading also develops a child's empathy. It offers the bigger picture. Shows them more than their small pocket of the world.

No child is ever too young (or too old) to be read to.

So for Reading Hour, pick up a book. Settle yourself down and read. Better yet, share the book with others. Your children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Share the love. Spread the word.  Build a bond with those you love.

Reading is one of those rare things, free entertainment.
Make the most of it.
