PiBoIdMo....

I decided to give PiBoIdMo a go...which is basically Picture Book Idea Month...although I have extended it to picture book and chapter book ideas. One idea a day for the month of November.

So far, so good. Some ideas are simple, some have turned into a few lines or paragraphs...one idea has half a page of writing. I always think back to the rumour that Roald Dahl had a notebook with  'write something about chocolate'....the rest became history and Willie Wonka was born.

You would think that because I work with children each day, that finding ideas would be easy. But the two days I work with babies and toddlers, there is not that much conversation.

I will rephrase that, there is much conversation, but quite difficult to understand. Most babies do love to babble and coo...it's the deciphering that is difficult. It's the Storytime day when I have 3-5 year olds, that's where you get some very interesting stories and ideas.

To help gather ideas we happened to have Little Miss over the weekend, and on Saturday we took her to Healesville Sanctuary.

From these two days I could have filled a note book up with her comments and phrases, and the way she looks at life.

She wanted to pat the animals, and of course none would come near...this brought about 'how can I love you if you don't let me.'  Alas the wallabies were still not inclined for so much loving.

Little Miss used to try to hug and cuddle our cat Tigger, not a very obliging animal at the best of times, and she would often come back in a grump. 'Why doesn't Tigger love me, I love her.' Difficult to explain to a six year old.

At the Sanctuary Little Miss had this amazing ability to put her hand down, anywhere and touch some form of animal poo. Bird poo, kangaroo poo, wallaby poo....don't know what but animal poo.

When we had cleaned her hands for the fourth time she put her hands on her hips and stated 'that's it, I'm not touching poo again!'

See what I mean, so many great ideas to build on.

We met my daughter and her husband for breakfast on the Sunday and Little Miss talked about marriage (she really enjoyed their wedding). We talked about marriage and how when you get married you tell someone that you love them and will love them forever.

'So when Lauren and Ash got married, did they choose each other or did someone tell them who to marry.'
'They chose each other'

Deep thought for awhile.

'So when you got married who did you choose?'
'I chose Grandpa Steve.'

More deep thought....'so who did he choose?'

I think I have a few more ideas to put down on paper from our weekend, but it's reassuring that ideas and starting points for stories and books are so readily accessible.

I'm not suggesting that everyone has to have an active six year old for the weekend, although it does seem to help, you simply have to listen for them.
