MEETING GOALS...
Recently my daughter and three of her friends completed the Oxfam Trailwalker. A journey of 100 kilometres in 48 hours. It was intense. It was amazing. It was completely insane.
As all good challenges go, there were preparations. The team trained and trained..they planned food drops by support crew....they planned appropriate clothing and medical needs.
They began chipper and excited...although a tad nervous of what could / would occur.
And so they set off....
They walked.....support crews met them, fed them, offered words of comfort and wisdom (well perhaps not exactly wisdom...more like encouragement)....and they walked some more...
The trek took them from Wheelers Hill, to Lysterfield Lake, onto Ferntree Gully and then up, up and up to Olinda, over to Mt Evelyn, along the Warburton trail and the mind bending repetitive flats....to Woori Yallock and onto Warburton then the last sprint - up and over Mt Little Joe to Wesburn Park.
After much walking, much cold and rain and wet, after much slipping and sliding, muscles aching, ankles and knees not co-operating, blisters and bruises, tears and laughter, they made it....
3200 participants began this trek----2535 made it to the end.
Puts a lot of things into perspective doesn't it?
Next time I think to complain because I'm only 30 000 words into my novel and it's the boring bit, and it's not fun any more and why am I doing it anyway....well firstly because I wanted to.
I began this strange adventure, I decided I would attempt ----yes love that word attempt- ---to write a story.
It's easy to give up. So damned easy. Too hard, too boring, no one is interested, it's not fun anymore, no one will read it anyway, no one is publishing, too much time spent for what......excuses. That's all these are...excuses.
How many times have we heard someone say they would write a novel 'when they had time' - you never have time! There is always a million other things in this reality we live in that demands your attention.
Or perhaps we know someone that began a novel but.....ran out of ideas/ out of inspiration / got bored / knows it's not good / no one will publish it anyway .....more excuses.
If you want to write - you will.
If you want to write a novel - you will.
There is never a guarantee that anything will be published but you do your best. You write the best story / novel / poem / script / manuscript/ piece of prose you can.
And you learn something each time you tackle, and finish, something big. You learn about yourself as a writer- about what holds you back - what your pit falls are - what inspires you- what brings you down - how you like to write- when you like to write- what you like to write.
I am so proud of my daughter and her friends...so very proud. They managed a feat that I would never dare even think about.
And that always inspires.
So what excuse will you use not to finish?
